Supported Independent Living
Experience a new level of independence with our SIL services!
What is NDIS Supported Independent Living?
SIL is a form of NDIS support that caters specifically to participants who require assistance with everyday tasks. It enables them to live independently, either on their own or with other participants, while also having access to assisted living support as needed.
The primary goal of SIL is to allow those living with disability to live independently and have a better quality of life.
Supported independent living providers can visit participants any time of the day and help with:
- Cooking
- Cleaning
- Budgeting
- Shopping
- Social activities
- Living skills development
- Medical appointments
- Bed transfers
- Feeding assistance
- Planning hobbies and activities
- Personal safety and security
- Medication management and administration

Got Questions About Supported NDIS SIL?
If you or your loved one are participating in supported independent living (SIL) in Darwin, Brisbane or the Gold Coast, it’s natural to have questions. To provide clarity and assist in your decision-making process, we have compiled answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about SIL below.
What is the Difference Between SIL, SDA, and ILO?
To better understand your support options, it’s important to be able to differentiate between them
- Supported Independent Living — SIL services provide you with an independent style of living. You will be in control over how you want to live and manage your life.
- Specialist Disability Accommodation — SDA provides accessible, purpose-built homes designed for people with significant and permanent disabilities.
- Individual Living Options — Individual Living Options (ILO) are types of living arrangements that prioritise the needs and preferences of the person in their home.
What is SIL Funding?
SIL funding is provided to participants who have been determined eligible for assisted living support. Your SIL funding is not linked to a specific provider, existing service, or a provider-determined support model.
As one of your leading SIL providers in Brisbane, we can help discuss the exact support that will be delivered to you within the approved funding. Our support workers can also assist in managing support delivery to ensure participants get the most out of their funding
How Much Does SIL Cost?
Supported Independent Living is funded under Core Supports — Assistance with Daily Life in your NDIS plan and it only covers your support needs.
At Horizon Community Services, our prices are in line with the NDIS Price Guide.
When it Comes to SIL, is There Anything the NDIS Doesn’t Cover?
Yes, there is. The NDIS does fund:
- Home rentals
- Mortgage payments
- Food and groceries
- Assistive technology
- Transport costs
- Day programs and work
- Electricity and water bills
- Recreational activities
- The cost of owning a vehicle
- Holidays
- Discretionary spending
